U.I. circa - SILVER PILL BOX WITH GEORGE WASHINGTON QUARTER DOLLAR
290 €
Pill box. In 880 silver, circular in shape
Description
Pill box in 880 silver, circular in shape, adorned on its lid with a 1943 American Quarter Dollar in 900 silver, bearing the effigy of George Washington.
Created in 1932 to mark the bicentennial of George Washington's birth, the Washington Quarter subsequently became a regular coin in United States currency.
The presence of this American coin dated 1943 on an Italian-made object lends it a fascinating historical resonance. That very same year, Allied forces landed in Sicily in July, followed by mainland Italy — notably at Salerno — in September. Was this coin brought over by an American soldier, exchanged on the ground and kept before being set into this pill box as a war souvenir? Its history remains unknown, yet the connection between its date and its Italian origin leaves room for this compelling hypothesis.
Half-half opening lid.
