First appearing around 1850, these small decorative cases designed to carry matches were named Vesta Cases, after Vesta, the Roman goddess of the sacred fire and the hearth. Fitted with an integrated striker, they allowed the match to be lit directly on the case.

What is a Vesta Case?+
A Vesta Case, known in French as a pyrogène, is a small metal container designed in the 19th century to carry matches safely. First appearing around 1850 in Great Britain, these accessories reached their peak between 1880 and 1910: English and French silversmiths produced them in sterling silver, gold, brass and steel, recognisable by their built-in striker. Pieces signed by great houses such as Sampson Mordan & Co. are highly sought after by collectors today.
