Knives

The antique collectible knife encompasses objects of very distinct purposes: the table knife, a serving piece intended for formal dining, the pocket knife, the daily companion of the gentleman or craftsman, and the presentation knife, designed more for display than for use. In Europe, the production of fine cutlery reached its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries, driven by renowned centres such as Sheffield in England, Solingen in Germany, Thiers in the Auvergne, and the Parisian workshops. Houses such as Rodgers & Sons, Bontgen & Sabin, and the cutlers of the Palais-Royal have left identifiable pieces, sought after today for their craftsmanship and provenance.

The materials used vary according to the standing of the piece: blades in forged or damascened steel, handles in solid silver, mother-of-pearl, ivory, tortoiseshell or precious wood, sometimes set with gold or enriched with niello work. Silver table knives frequently bear hallmarks and maker's marks, essential for establishing the origin, date and metal standard.

To assess an antique knife, a discerning collector examines first and foremost the condition of the blade — the absence of deep pitting, re-tempering or excessive grinding —, the legibility of the hallmarks, the soundness of the rivets or folding mechanism for pocket knives, as well as the presence of a maker's signature engraved or struck on the tang or the flat of the blade. The integrity of the handle, free from cracks or concealed restorations, also determines the market and heritage value of the piece.
