Lighters

The collectible lighter refers to any portable device designed to produce a flame, which appeared in elaborate mechanical forms from the early 19th century onwards. Before petrol lighters became widespread in the 1920s–1930s, tinder models — using a flint and dried fungus — dominated European production, particularly in England, France and Austria. The interwar period marked a decisive turning point: great houses such as Dunhill in London, Ronson in the United States and Thorens in Switzerland industrialised manufacturing while maintaining refined finishes, giving rise to pieces that are highly sought after today. Bakelite, chrome, silver-plated brass and solid silver are the most representative materials of this era.

For a collector, several criteria determine the value of an antique lighter. The condition of the mechanism takes precedence: the wheel, spring and ignition system should ideally be functional and original, with no replacement parts. Hallmarks — guaranteeing the silver standard, maker's mark, country and assay year — should be examined carefully, particularly on British and French pieces made before 1940. The presence of an engraved or stamped signature from the producing house, a serial number or an original case significantly strengthens the authenticity and traceability of the piece.

Advertising and mass-produced lighters from the 1940s–1950s, in brushed chrome or nickel-plated brass, appeal to a more accessible collector clientele, while hallmarked silver pieces from the early 20th century or signed Art Deco models such as the Dunhill Aquarium are aimed at more seasoned enthusiasts. In all cases, the absence of visible soldering, the consistency of materials and the legibility of hallmarks remain the fundamental benchmarks for reliably assessing a piece.
