Snuff Boxes

The snuff box is a pocket case designed to store snuff, a practice widespread across Europe from the 17th to the 19th century. As much a symbol of social standing as a utilitarian object, it accompanied the codified gestures of snuff-taking — a true ritual of court and salon life. The great silversmithing capitals — Paris, London, Geneva, Augsburg, Saint Petersburg — produced remarkable series, some signed by identified master silversmiths: Jean Ducrollay and Charles Le Bastier in Paris, Johann Christian Neuber in Dresden for his hardstone snuff boxes. In Geneva, workshops specialising in painted enamel achieved a level of technical mastery that remains a benchmark for collectors.

Materials vary considerably according to period and origin: plain or chased silver, vermeil, gold, silver-mounted tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, Saxon or Battersea enamel, Meissen or Sèvres porcelain set within metal mounts. The most prized decorations depict gallant scenes in the Rococo tradition, miniature portraits, landscapes or finely engraved floral motifs.

When assessing an antique snuff box, several criteria are decisive. Hallmarks — guarantee, standard, maker's mark, town mark — allow origin and date to be established with precision. The hinge mechanism should open without resistance or excessive play, a sign of careful upkeep or a restoration worth noting. The condition of the enamel or miniature, the absence of concealed repairs, and the presence of a signature on the reverse of the decorative plaque are all essential indicators for authenticating the piece and estimating its value.
