Cigar Cutters

The cigar cutter is a precision instrument designed to cleanly sever the head of a cigar before smoking, ensuring an even burn and a controlled draw. Emerging in the second half of the 19th century alongside the widespread adoption of the Havana cigar in European bourgeois and aristocratic circles, it quickly established itself as an indispensable accessory for any gentleman mindful of his appearance. England, France and Austria-Hungary were the principal centres of production, with renowned silversmithing houses such as Sampson Mordan & Co. in London and Parisian workshops supplying the great merchants of the rue de Rivoli.

Collectible models come in several mechanisms: the single- or double-blade guillotine, riveted scissor-style cutters, and spring-loaded or retractable-blade systems, often housed in a pocket case. The favoured materials are sterling silver, silver-plated metal, hardened steel and, for the most sought-after examples, gold or vermeil enriched with enamels, semi-precious stones or niello work. The decorative schemes reflect successive styles: the floral and feminine motifs of Art Nouveau, the geometric rigour of Art Déco, and the animal figurines so beloved by hunters of the Victorian era.

When assessing an antique cigar cutter, the collector first examines the condition of the blade — any dulling or corrosion significantly diminishes its value — and the smoothness of the mechanism, which should operate without excessive play or unusual resistance. Hallmarks (silver standard, assay office, maker's mark) are essential indicators of authenticity, allowing the piece to be dated and localised with precision. A maker's signature engraved on the object, or an original case accompanying it, represents additional provenance criteria that can meaningfully influence its market value.
