Boxes

Antique boxes represent one of the most refined expressions of European decorative arts. Everyday objects elevated to the rank of works of silversmithing, they were used to hold sweets, tobacco, beauty patches, jewels or medicines according to their format. Bonbonnières, pill boxes, nécessaires, jewellery boxes and presentation cases each embody a precise social function, each governed by well-established formal codes. The miniaturisation of their decoration and the technical mastery they demand make them privileged witnesses to the craftsmanship of their era.

The most sought-after production among collectors comes from France, England and Imperial Russia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Parisian workshops of the faubourg Saint-Antoine, the London silversmiths of the Victorian era, and houses such as Fabergé in Saint-Petersburg brought this art to its pinnacle. The materials employed — solid silver, vermeil, champlevé or cloisonné enamel, tortoiseshell, ivory, inlaid precious woods — largely determine the value and dating of pieces. Limoges or Vienna enamels, for their part, constitute a distinct family in their own right.

For the discerning collector, several criteria demand close examination. Hallmarks and assay marks, legible and consistent with the legislation of the country of origin, allow the metal to be authenticated and the piece dated with precision. The condition of the hinges, the quality of the clasp and the evenness of the lid fitting attest to the mechanical integrity of the object. Maker's signatures or engraved presentation cartouches on the interior add valuable provenance, while the absence of invisible restorations — soldering, enamel repainting or cabochon replacements — determines the commercial and historical authenticity of the piece.
