Magnifying Glasses

The antique magnifying glass is a precision optical instrument designed to enlarge details invisible to the naked eye. Used from the seventeenth century onwards by naturalists, watchmakers and jewellers, it became in the nineteenth century a fully-fledged desk and pocket accessory, whose mount speaks as much to the care lavished on the object as to the social standing of its owner. The jeweller's loupe, with its single lens set in a rigid mount, sits alongside the folding pocket magnifier with its pivoting or sliding mechanism, tucking neatly into a leather or tortoiseshell case.

The principal centres of production in the nineteenth century were England, France and Austria-Hungary. London silversmiths produced remarkable examples in sterling silver, often hallmarked and dated, while Parisian houses favoured mounts in gilt brass or repoussé-worked silver. Certain magnifying glasses bear the signatures of renowned opticians such as Chevalier or Nachet in Paris, or Dollond in London, which considerably enhances their documentary interest. Tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl and ebonite are among the most common materials found in handles and grips.

For a collector, several points merit close attention: the optical quality of the lens, free from bubbles or deep scratches; the condition of the mount and its joints; and the presence of hallmarks or maker's marks allowing the metal to be authenticated and the piece accurately dated. An optician's signature engraved on the mount constitutes a compelling element of provenance. Sliding or pivoting mechanisms should operate without excessive play — a sign of careful maintenance or superior craftsmanship.
