Antique desk accessories encompass all the objects that equipped the studies of the 18th and 19th centuries: single and double-well inkwells, pen holders, paperweights, wax seals, paper knives and writing sets. These pieces served precise purposes, from sealing correspondence to managing the writing desk, and bear witness to an era when handwritten communication was a codified social act. Great Britain, France and Germany were the principal centres of production, with houses such as Mappin & Webb or Christofle for silver-plated metal pieces, and Parisian workshops specialising in gilt bronze during the Second Empire.

The most common materials are sterling silver, silver-plated copper (EPNS or white metal), bronze, brass and onyx for paperweight bases. Certain pieces combine these materials with tortoiseshell, ivory or blown crystal, particularly in prestigious inkwells from the Napoléon III period or the late Art Nouveau era. English productions from the Victorian reign are often distinguished by the precision of their finish and the richness of their repoussé ornamentation.

When assessing a piece, the collector should first verify the presence and legibility of hallmarks or assay marks, which guarantee the metal content. On inkwells, the condition of the opening mechanism and the integrity of the inner well — often in glass or earthenware — are determining factors. Seals should be examined for the sharpness of their engraving and the absence of re-soldering. A uniform patina, free from abrasive repolishing, remains the hallmark of respectful preservation.
