Padlocks

The padlock is one of the oldest portable locking devices. Used since Antiquity to secure chests, doors, warehouses and luggage, it reached the height of its craft production between the XVIII th and the early XX th century. It was during this period that European locksmiths — French, English and German foremost among them — competed in ingenuity to produce key-operated, alphabetical combination and secret mechanisms, where opening required a precise manipulation known only to the owner. In France, the centres of Vimeu (Somme) and the Saint-Étienne region concentrated a dense artisanal output, while in England manufacturers such as Bramah and Chubb developed patented high-security systems. The forms adopted reflect the tastes of the era: heart-shaped, stylised animal and miniature chest padlocks, frequently crafted in brass, wrought iron or blued steel.

When building a cohesive collection, several criteria deserve attention. The condition of the mechanism is paramount: a padlock whose spring still functions and whose original key has been preserved commands a significantly higher value. Maker's marks, sometimes struck on the body or the shackle, allow the workshop to be identified and the dating to be refined. On English examples in particular, patent marks frequently accompany the locksmith's name. Regular wear to contact surfaces, as distinct from knocks or signs of forced entry, attests to authentic use without structural damage.
