Money Clips

The money clip is a masculine accessory that emerged in the second half of the nineteenth century, in response to the widespread adoption of banknotes in everyday transactions. Designed to hold folded bills neatly without creasing them, it offered an elegant alternative to the wallet, favoured by gentlemen who prized discretion and understated refinement. Produced primarily in Great Britain, France and the United States between 1880 and 1940, these pieces came from London silversmithing workshops — notably those of Birmingham and Sheffield — or from Parisian houses specialising in small pocket silverware. Several great names in luxury leathergoods and jewellery also produced them for a wealthy clientele.

The most common materials are sterling silver, vermeil and silver-plated metal. Quality examples are frequently decorated with guilloché engraving, geometric or floral chasing, and personalised with engraved monograms, sometimes surmounted by a heraldic crown. The mechanism relies on an internal spring whose tension secures the banknotes: its suppleness and resistance to corrosion are essential criteria of functionality.

For a collector, several points deserve close attention: the presence and legibility of hallmarks — both assay and maker's marks — which guarantee the origin and metal standard; the overall condition of the surface, particularly the absence of dents, clumsy repairs or re-applied gilding; and the quality of the spring mechanism, whose proper functioning directly determines the piece's practical value and market desirability.
