The antique case is an object of nineteenth-century daily life, designed to protect and discreetly transport essential accessories: spectacles, sewing needles, visiting cards, sewing or writing necessaires. Produced in great quantities in England, France and Russia, these cases were the product of precise goldsmithing craftsmanship, subject to strict hallmarking regulations. London houses such as Sampson Mordan, or Parisian silversmiths working under the Poinçon de Garantie regulations, produced pieces of remarkable technical quality, intended for a bourgeois or aristocratic clientele attentive to elegance in the finest details.

Materials vary according to the social standing of the patron and the intended use of the object. Solid silver predominates, often paired with a silk or velvet interior. Shagreen — granulated ray skin — offers a characteristic and durable surface, while champlevé or guilloché enamel brings colour to gilt metal mounts. Morocco leather fitted with brass or silver clasps provides a more accessible alternative. Many of these cases bear engraved monograms, armorial bearings or interlaced ciphers, making them valuable documents in the family history of their owners.

For the collector, examination begins with the hallmarks: the maker's mark, standard mark and guarantee mark allow the piece to be dated and localised with precision. The condition of the opening mechanism — hinges, push-button clasps or sliding fastenings — directly determines the value of the object, as does the integrity of the interior lining. A legible maker's signature, documented provenance or a finely engraved personalisation are additional criteria for appreciation in this segment of the antique decorative arts market.
